Tooth Bridge

When a patient has a missing tooth, a bridge may be recommended. A bridge anchors a false tooth, or pontic, in the tooth-gap by attaching it to two crowns placed on the natural teeth bordering the gap.  With a well-constructed bridge, patients regain their chewing ability and get an improved smile to boot!  Filling in missing teeth positively impacts your facial structure, improves your bite, and decreases the amount of stress on remaining teeth.  

To determine if a bridge is right for you, your doctor will first determine if the surrounding teeth are adequate for crown placement.  When you are ready to begin your bridge, your doctor will shape the bordering teeth in preparation for crowns.  Then, an impression of the area is taken (the missing tooth, plus the two bordering teeth). A custom-designed bridge is then created, consisting of your pontic anchored to two crowns.  While your final bridge is being made, you will wear a temporary bridge. Then, your new bridge is fitted and placed for maximum comfort. With proper care, your dental bridge should remain functional and natural-looking for eight to fifteen years!
